Figlets

I live in Poole, Dorset. Ten years' ago I planted a Brown Turkey fig tree. Each year I harvested just six figs. Last year I harvested 22 figs and this year 16. Each year in late autumn there has been a plethora of hard figlets the size of a gobstopper which eventually went black. These I removed in the spring. However, this year in late autumn the figlets have grown almost to the size of a normal fig. They have turned brown and soft and have been harvested. So far there have been 10 figlets.  Is this a one-off I wonder?

  • I had a few mature to an edible state this autumn. In their Mediterranean habitat they produce two harvests. Usually in the UK it's only the one. I think the strange weather has clearly helped ripen them despite the colder temperatures. I'd think other forum members would have had a bit of a treat in the last couple of weeks.

  • Thank you for the post. Perhaps global warming has played a part!
  • Spent far too many months up fig trees in Greece...oh the bloody itch from the leaves, but love the flavour ;)

  • Yes, I had 2 harvests this year as well. I can't really spot any nascent pea figs now, though, so I'm hoping next year's harvest isn't affected (harvest being a very grand word for the 20 or so figs I get, perhaps "snack" is more appropriate!).
  • Snack, yep that's the operative word @strelitzia32
