Housepant - Begonia Problems with leaves

I have a couple of Begonias.  Both seem to be suffering from stress. One has brown patches on the leaves and the other seems to have silvery white patches.  See the attached photos.  Any help would or advice would be appreviated

Might they have been over-watered?  Or had water splashed onto their leaves?

  • Possibly, I only water when the stems seem to droop. Do you think there is any way to rescue the plants?

It's hard to see from the photos... if the rot has spread to the main stems you may have lost them.  But there are a few healthy leaves which you could use to take cuttings and grow new plants, if you want.  I can certainly see undamaged leaves on the lower plant.  It's really easy and amazing to get new plants for free... if you google "propagating begonia rex" you can see exactly how to do it, with as little equipment as a jam jar of water, if you have a healthy leaf with a stem.  :)

If you grow new plants, or nurse the old ones back to health, I'd suggest you put the pot on a saucer so you can water from below.  Keep them in reasonable light but out of direct sun, and let the surface of the compost dry out a little between waterings (feel it with your finger).  They need to be drier in winter.

Edited to say:  some houseplants droop when they're too wet, as well as when they're dry, confusingly!
