Garlic Germination

Hi all,

I've recently started gardening and managed to grow some crops over lockdown (carrots, lettuce and tomatoes) and now I've got the bug!  I've built myself a couple of raised beds in preparation for next year.

I planted about nine cloves of garlic mid October as a 'test' crop and wondered when you would expect to see shoots?  Do they sit dormant for a while and then grow?

Many Thanks!
Jon

They grow some roots before they start to think about going up, depending on the weather you may see green shoots in a few weeks or if it gets cold you may not see any shoots until march, either way your cloves will be developing good root systems to give them a flying start when it warms up again in the spring.

Yes - garlic isn't a 'quick' crop like lettuce and toms etc. Much longer term  :)

  • Fantastic!  I knew it was going to be a crop for harvesting next year but I wasn't sure what I should be looking for in the short term.  Now that I know that they're hopefully putting all their garlicky energy into creating a good root system I won't panic  :)

    Thanks for all your help!
  • Garlic Update!

I’ve got a couple of shoots popping up which I guess is the result of the recent warm weather. Now that it’s cooling down I presume that growth will slow but will the new shoots need protection if it gets frosty?

    Thanks!
  • They’ll be fine ... fret not 😉 👍
