Identifying disease in beech hedge

Hi, I was hoping someone could help me identify this disease in my neighbours beech hedge. It is spreading to higher parts of the hedge now. Many thanks in advance - Daniel

They're pretty trouble free. Is the site waterlogged?
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

The only thing springs to mind is Beech Scale.

It usually leaves a white deposit, but if the attack was a while back it's probably gone mouldy leaving 'black soot mould'.

Can it be removed with a stiff brush?
Can you see any sign of scale insects? - they look like tiny brown limpets about 1mm wide dotted around the branches and twigs.
As Fg says they're pretty robust trees.
If it is scale insect, probably nothing to worry about
You could have a look into Winter Tree Wash as a preventative
