I have 3 varieties incl Herbert all in pots. This is their 5th year.
The other 2 are Patriot and OzarkBlue

Patriot - early fruiting but bland taste. Good crop of small-medium berries from June

Herbert - start picking late June - a really good blueberry taste (reputedly the best) but quite acidic, a reasonable harvest of medium size berries

OzarkBlue - Overall my fave. Start picking from early July. Fat juicy berries with an attractive bloom. Not quite as tasty as Herbert, but much sweeter and bigger and plentiful.

I think you're always best off with 2 plants at least to get good pollination and a decent harvest.

  • I bought my 'Sunshine Blue' from Trehane Nursery. Trehane were the first nursery in the UK to grow and sell blueberries and have supplied plants for a (relatively) recent RHS trial.

'Sunshine Blue' is, as the link states, a highly ornamental plant and does suit pot culture. It fruited for a longer period (but earlier) than 'Patriot', my other purchase, and produces small, delicious berries. It's still looking good in the pot. It receives full sun in summer but will not in winter due to house shadow.

Trehane's sent excellent cultural instructions/advice. I see they now have new stock in after the sell-out during lockdown and I'm tempted to buy a third variety because their plants have been so good.
