Blackberry alternative

I remember watching an episode of Gardeners World earlier this year where a blackberry alternative was discussed

Its driving me mad but I can't remember the name of the fruit and no amount of internet searching has revealed the answer.

Loganberry is often suggested as an alternative, but I feel sure that this is not the answer.

(If it makes any difference, I hope to grow the fruit and then make some wine from it).

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Stephen.

Loganberries are the first to come to my mine too.  Black raspberries?  Serviceberries/Juneberries are an alternative to blueberries (and don’t require acid soil).. is it possible that was the topic?  It seems to me, blackberries grow pretty much anywhere, so little need to an alternative - unless you want something else.

Was it the film that a viewer had sent in? They were growing a blackberry-ish fruit that I hadn't heard of before. Youngberries? or something that sounded like that.

  • Yes, Im mostly sure that it was from a viewer. Youngberries has the right sort of sound in my head.
  • Fantastic. I'm very sure that "Youngberries" is exactly what it was. Many, many thanks.

    Youngberries sound pretty good

My only reservation, aside from the fruit’s fragility, is that if a plant has a 94 year heritage why aren’t more people growing it?

Are the youngberries thorny or thornless?

And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)
