Acidanthera murielae

I planted these bulbs this year and as you can see, the leaves have grown well but no flowers have appeared.  They are against a south facing wall.  I have kept them watered throughout the summer.  Anyone any idea why they may not be flowering. Many thanks

    Hunger!
We had some which did not flower last year, so we fed heavily once the leaves appeared and throughout the growing season with a foliage feed. We then repotted them in Spring in fresh compost with a lot of added fertiliser. They have flowered really well this year.
  • I have the same problem with these bulbs in pots...the only time they have flowered well for me they have been planted in a well-fed raised bed in full sun.  I think Palustris may be right in that they may need lots of food and growing space so I would try repotting and adding some long-season fertiliser granules.

    They won't flower now though.
If you feed them as they die down it will help for building them up for next year though.
Not hardy everywhere, so that will have a bearing on how you keep them over winter.  :)

I treat them as annuals, as I can't be bothered lifting them to overwinter. Cheap to buy. I keep them in pots in the greenhouse until it's safe to plant them out, and then keep them fed, as @Palustris says. Most do reasonably well. They aren't as easy in pots as they are in the ground either.

  • My book says it flowers late summer/early autumn and I have a good clump of leaves. I know they flower late but now I'm wondering if I should have fed them. If they don't perform I'll be happy to re move them cos it'll leave a nice space for a small shrub.

I love the scent, reminds me of Lux soap (or similar) from my childhood.

Mine are in the ground and just flowering now so yes, they are late to flower and a boon for pollinators this late on so definitely worth growing and worth feeding to get the flowers.

I too planted these bulbs sometime around May, they have lush growth and no flowers yet.
