Rhododendron is it a dwarf variety

Before I start I am not a gardener. I do try to make the outdoor space look pretty,  even started growing simple marrigolds etc from seeds the last couple of years and have a selection of plants in pots.
About 11 years ago (if not longer) I was  given 2 varieties of rhododendron which I love, both are doing really well at the moment. They started life in the ground for a couple of years, however I didn't  like the where they were and transfered them to pots (xlarge) and are thriving. I am now thinking about putting them back in the ground.  So my question - is there anyway I can tell if the are dwarf variety ? I have no idea why I might think they might be !!

    In a word - no.  :)
Some are dwarf, and they're usually azalea varieties, but it's a bit of a grey area.
Many take a very long time to reach a couple of metres, but then keep growing, some reach that size in about five years.
They can be pruned anyway, so it doesn't really matter  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • It might help to see pics and get an idea of the size of the leaves.
Large leaves usually means huge Rhodo's.
Tiny leaves it will be slower a dwarf one.

    That's a good point @Silver surfer - I should have thought of that  ;)
Going by the age of them, it sounds like they could be smaller varieties, but having been in pots for a while, they would be possibly be a bit smaller anyway.

Pix definitely, but what sort of size are they @iris.mc?

  • Thank you @Fairygirl and  @Silver surfer  for the responses, hope you can get an idea of the size from the pics. I do appreciate your help
  • Leaves are quite large so these could easily grow to a decent size.
    Certainly not dwarf ones.

On the plus side- they do look extremely healthy, which can be very difficult to achieve in pots  :)
Whatever care they're getting, it's been excellent.
