I think it's a corncockle, Agrostemma githago. It's poisonous, but a) so are a huge number of common garden plants, and b) you're not likely to give it a chew...

Thank you - is it poisonous to cats? Not that my cat will go and eat it but would be good to know. She smells everything in the garden.
I looked it up. Says it contains gigathin and agrostemmic acid about which there is virtually no information except that they are poisonous. Doesn't say how these compounds work. Surprising to find no information especially as I am a pharmacologist. Also says the flowers are virtually extinct in the wild and it is described as 'rare'. How strange that I have grown them from a random seed packet from years ago. I thought they looked like lavatera flowers.
