Weird brown marks/spots on basil stem and leaves (indoors)

edited October 2020 in Fruit & veg
Hello, ive spotted these on some of the stems and leaves, not all of the basil have only 3 so far but 3 outoff maybe 20-30 basil stems i have in same pot.

but these affected is the biggest basils i have in the pot, is this a step in basil growing because its being allowed to grow without pruning or is it another problem/issue like flies?

The spots on the leaves is only on those with these marks on the stem.

its being growed indoors

  • could this be Fusarium wilt issue? and if it is, is the only solution to kill the plant?

The top photos look like the stem is splitting. Maybe because of inconsistent watering or feeding.

The spots on the leaves look like water has got onto the leaves.

I must say, my basil doesn’t have hairy leaves or leaves with spiky edges. Are yours a special type?
The watering system i use is Autowater pots i did forget to fill it up for a day, so its been empty for water for about a day now, can this be the issue? theres water under the soil so the roots have only access to it. i refilled the pot with water about 1 hour ago when i noticed these marks.

i tried to search about this issue on google after i asked here and i came up with this, can it be this or is it watering/feeding that is the issue?

    Fusarium wilt

Fungal disease spread by contaminated seeds or soil.

    Symptoms: brown streaks on the stems;

stunted and wilted plants with yellowish leaves.

The basil im growing is 3 different types, when i buy these kind of basil herbs in the store it doesnt have spiky edges but i can for sure say its the basil i wanted as the flavour is the same or even better then store herbs.

Im growing Sweet Basil, Holy basil which is the one with spiky edges. and Lemon basil

The lemon basil have 1 stem which looks like the brown streaks on the stem and 2 of the Holy basil have the brown streaks + leaves.

The sweet basil im growing doesnt have any of those signs yet.

EDIT: i have sprayed the basil with Whiteflies remedy that kills flies couple days ago so the brown spots on the leaves could be what you said above then about water on the leaves, but what about the stems? thats worrying me alot more.

If you look at this link

    https://gardening.stackexchange.com/questions/19596/my-basil-stems-are-cracking-and-turning-brown

you’ll see basil plants with stems just like yours. They say that it’s just a sign of age.

The whitefly spray probably spoiled the leaves.

I wouldn’t be too keen to eat a leaf that had been sprayed with insecticide. Not my idea of a healthy diet.😕

Thanks for the info about hairy basil.😁
Ok, thanks for the info. i was worried it was fungus and would have to start over. but what it says there in link could be true, the plants is about 2,5 months old since seed was planted.

Well if you figure out why Holy basil have white spiky edges on them i would like to know aswell because i have been searching about it before and why, but i cant find any research or info on why holy basil have spiky edges on it, it kinda looks like a defense mechanism and such for insects. but if that was the case there most likely would be research/info about it to find on google, So if you find out the reason i would be happy to know.

i dont think i have much of a choice in the start there was alot of white flies who keept eating the leaves but after using this spray its just comming less and less of them. i would for sure rather not spray the basil but its either spraying them or letting the flies eat it and nothing for me to eat.

i am washing the basil 3 times before i use them in food and according to the flower seller it was accepted by the health government and such so should be safe just dont spray directly into your eyes :P
