Cut flowers not lasting.

I have been using my dahlias as cut flowers this year but they’re only lasting a day or 2 in a vase. What can I do to get them to last longer?

    Bleach and sugar is what I've always used, apart from when I just bring in stuff from the garden that's easily replenished.
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    I use soluble aspirin when I remember but last time I tried a few drops of cider vinegar in the water and that worked well.  No special stem treatment.
