Does an unswept chimney make a difference to the smell, then? Perhaps I should be more concerned about the fire hazard. @josusa47

What you are smelling may be tarry residues in their chimney and if that gets hot enough it will catch fire.  Have a friendly chat and ask if they've had it swept recently because it is smelly and may also affect their insurance status if not cleaned.  It does here and in Belgium.

The neighbour may well not even be aware of the smell.  They are inside enjoying the warmth, not outside copping the pong.  Speak to them about your concerns.

I've lost a pair of secateurs. The only place they can be is in the brown wheelie bin which is full of leaves. Not sure if I can be a***d to tip them all out again😡

Cost-benefit?  Were they decent Felcos or just cheap?  How easy to replace in lockdown?

I've been wrestling with technology for the last hour or so - not my strong point. I recently bought a smartphone because I didn't want to be left behind but I'm struggling with it. it doesn't help that we have such a lousy phone signal in this area.

Idea going to keep the leaves in the hopes they'll fit down a bit and top them out before collections resume next year @pansyface
