Problem solving

I have inherited a beautiful mature holly tree and I have raised the canopy in order to plant beneath or make a rockery underneath as a feature as the ground is thick with roots. Unfortunately there are shoots popping up all around which are growing from I suppose from the roots. Is it possible to stop the growing or will I have to live with them?

All you can do is snip them off as they appear
You will probably get seedlings too. Pull them out.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • If you dig out the suckers with a bit of root attached you can use them to produce new trees elsewhere and I think this makes the re-sprouting a bit less likely. Just snipping them off may be easier but the chances of another few growing up from the same place are a bit greater from what I have seen with some other tree types.
