Possibly a type of phytophthora ?
  • Thanks for your comment, yes possibly. I'm struggling to get a definitive answer though, which I really need haha.
    Thanks.

I might be quite wrong but I'm just wondering... are you positive that's a fungus, Chris?  The little lumps look a bit like scale insects, and there's a particular one specific to beech trees which leads to something called beech bark disease.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

I think the beech scale insects tend to be wooly and congregate in the junction of branches. Try scraping a piece off to see if it is indeed a scale insect infestation. I thought of coral spot as a possible I.D. but that usually only appears on dead brown wood.
  • Thanks for your advice, I was thinking coral spot, have a look at this picture....

Take a look at Dacrymyces stillatus which is sometimes called common jellyspot, which can be quite variable in appearance:
I believe these type of jelly fungi only grow on already dead wood, so likely something else killed the twig/branch/tree such as drought, fire blight or phytophthora and this then moved in (if it is indeed that or a related fungus.)  I would cut through a dead section and look to see if there is any dark staining in the wood.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
