Tree for Identification

in Plants
Hi all,
My father in law has been given an old tree - he makes things out of them to sell for a local charity. He's unsure what species of tree it is (he likes to know if what he's working needs any special treatment) so hoping someone here may know. I've added a photo of the leaves, which cluster at the end of short 'knobbly' stems coming from the bigger branches. It had already been cut down and chopped when he picked it up, but apparently some of the trunk pieces are a good couple of feet in diameter so it was a sizable specimen! The trunk bark was described as 'shiny, but not bright like silver birch'.

Thank you!
David
