Wildflower perennial patch

LatimerLatimer Posts: 1,068
Hi all

There's a patch of grass that I allowed to grow long from when we moved in. I'd hoped that I'd get some wildflowers appearing but all I got was long grass and rye, I think.

I now want to cut it all back to sow some yellow rattle over the winter. I'm cutting it back with shears then raking it to clear the ground. I've attached a picture of a small patch where I've started and was wondering if that was clear enough or I needed to expose more soil still?

The ground below the grass is very wet and mossy, unsurprisingly I suppose as is not seen the sun for a couple of years!

I’ve no idea what I’m doing.

You've made a good start on that bit. Yellow rattle probably needs to be sown asap and some hardy wildflower seeds and maybe some species crocuses for early bees. There are some moths that like grass, I always feel sorry as they fly up when I mow.
East Dorset, new (to me) rather neglected garden.

@SueAtoo thanks! Ordered up a few extra seeds this morning. Plan to get the patch cleared and seeded by next weekend at the latest
