Flowering Ornamental Cherry Tree - pruning

We have a large, well established ornamental cherry tree in our garden. There are several large branches from the main trunk crossing and the top of the tree is now hitting telephone and power cables. I have read conflicting advice on when to prune (after flowering in June) vs drastic pruning (October) - the removal of the crossing branches would be considered drastic pruning. Any advice? Thanks

  • Cherry trees are liable to be effected by silver leaf disease if pruned in winter from what I have heard so I understood they should only be pruned in summer.

Yes, to avoid Silverleaf infection Prunus should be pruned when the sap is rising ... May/June is good.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Okay thanks. Why do you think I have read that major pruning should happen in autumn/winter?

For most trees and shrubs - it is the best time.  :)
Easier to see what needs removing, and it's when they're dormant.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
