Bulbs in Pots

I am planting bulbs in pots for the first time. Can to pots be kept outside all winter or can they be sheltered in the garage?

Mine all stay outside, in all weather.
No need to protect any bulbs, unless they're types that aren't hardy. Do you know what you have?

  • Hi, that's for comments. Mainly Tulips, Daffodils, Alliums and a few other varieties

    They're all perfectly hardy  :)
Tulips like being on the drier side, so if you get a lot of rain in your area, it's worth keeping them against a house wall or similar, over winter  :)

I see Monty said on Friday, keep the pots outside but cover in glass, that's a bit of a misnomer! Tulips planted in December, because of Tulip fire. The tops of my summer flowering Lillies haven't died down yet, and my Asparagus Ferns, NEVER go brown and dry.

Monty was referring to Iris reticulata when he said protect from the rain with a sheet of glass or put in cold frame.
He said that only applied to the iris as they were prone to rot whereas daffs etc could cope with wetter conditions.

Tulips can be planted in pots without any real problem - it's only in the ground that it's a problem.
I've never protected reticulatas either, and we certainly aren't short of water here. If they're planted in the correct type of medium it isn't a problem.

If you have squirrels you will need to protect your bulbs from them. I put a wire cover over my pots and remove it when the leaves are a decent height though you could leave it in place if it doesn't interfere with the aesthetics.
