Bare root raspberries

Due to delivery delays this year my bare root raspberries went in very late and only one or two even showed a leaf. However most feel well rooted in the soil when pulled gently. Should I wait for next year to see if they grow? Advice welcome.

  • Yes, even if they went in at the usual time, they don't always show much above ground for the first year but the roots will be growing and they wil produce new canes from below (or close to the) ground in the spring.  If any don't show new shoots next spring then they probaby didn't make it.

  • Thank you. I'll be patient!

Mine took 16 months to appear above ground...
Hope you don't have to be that patient :)

But when did did come up, they were everywhere. As Bob says they were forming a big root system

  • Just hope I can distinguish them from the brambles...my ongoing challenge...no matter how deep I dig down(
