    Either - depending on your abilities. If using brick - they'll need to be properly mortared in and solid. The weight of soil will be quite considerable  :)

  • Thank-you. They are at the height they need to be already so am not overly concerned about them growing anymore - just need to keep them alive! Maybe taking up a slab or 2 is not a bad idea and then build a planter around them as well. They were delivered today and then sack barrowed into place.
  • They are from a tree nursery and have an air pot thingy around them as they've grown so I thought they might be OK for a month or two before I worked out what to do with the root ball!

    If you can get some slabs up, that would help.  :)

    Just cos they're the height yo want doesn't mean they'll comply and stop growing so you're going to have to earn about pruning, feeding, watering etc to keep them healthy;

    I would suggest railway sleepers, old or new as being strong and heavy enough to cope with the weight of the soil you'll need.  You'll need some muscle to move them but it'll be faster and stronger than bricks and cheaper too if you don't have brick-laying skills.

    Definitely lift up some slabs so the roots can go deeper as this will help stabilise them and find a way of tieing them to that wall till they're established and, as advised, good quality John Innes no 3 compost but annual applications of fertiliser in spring as the nutrients are limited and a mulch to retain moisture and keep down weeds.
