  I'm learning a lot here!  Thanks also for the info on Bearded Irises - I am planning to plant out a bed of these where my cutting bed is now, as I am relocating it to the veg patch.  Many thanks everyone.

  Mine are definitely herbaceous - are the shrubby ones also known as tree peonies or are they something different again?

  Yes. There are a few crosses between herbaceous and shrubby ones called Itoh hybrids. Never been able to afford them though.
