Growing a rose from a bunch of flowers

We had some roses in a bunch of flowers recently. The flowers faded but I noticed a shoot on one of the rose stems so I recut the bottom and stuck it in some water in a milk bottle - the shoot is growing nicely but can it be planted? No sign of any roots growing though, is there anything I can do with this stem to make it live?
