Can anyone identify these weeds spreading over my lawn.

I have a problem with these weeds that are spreading over my lawn. Can anyone identify them & advise me how to get rid of them please, i have tried weeding them out but they just keep growing, baring in mind i need something that is harmless to wildlife ( & hedgehogs that i'm lucky to have visiting this year ).

I think it's ragwort, a real pest in fields and poisonous to livestock, especially horses. It will gradually disappear with regular mowing. You could try digging it out but you have to remove every bit of root. You could try weed killer, depending on whether you are for or against it.

They don't have tap roots, I know because of digging them out of my horse paddock, but they can grow back from roots left in the ground. However, the usual way of spreading is by seed, lots of yellow flowers followed by hundreds of fluffy seeds. You can buy a special tool for digging out ragwort in farm supply shops, maybe in garden centres.

  • I get one or two every year, even though the nearest plants to me are along the main road over a mile away!
