scented climbers

As her unpaid gardener my daughter has set me a very difficult task. She has a seated arbour with a trough each side that she wants me to plant with climbers.  Her request is scented white flower and maybe evergreen and thornless.  Her garden is small but warm as south facing but one of the troughs is in shade most of the time due to its aspect between a 6 foot high fence and the arbour.
Any suggestions would be most helpful.
Thanks
June

  • Hi @jsimpson17 the obvious choice is Trachelospermum jasminoides - small white heavily scented flowers, evergreen, no thorns! You'd have to check on your local conditions - they are not totally hardy everywhere. They can also be quite vigorous, but can be trimmed to keep in bounds.

The troughs are a major factor too. What size are they?
Very few climbers do well long term in them unless the containers are a decent enough size.
Some of the winter/spring flowering clematis would be fine in them, but I'm guessing you want summer flowering, and most clems aren't scented. You could add scented annuals like sweet peas though, which would use the clems as a support.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Jasmine isn't hardy everywhere, and honeysuckles are no use in containers.  :)

  • Thank you all for your help.  I may try a winter clematis on the shaded side and a jasmine on the other.  Looking forward to softening the arbour outline.  :)
