Cotinus gone funny

Hello. A few weeks ago we had nice weather but horrendous winds at the same time. Some of the branches started to droop so thinking that it was dry at the roots, I gave it a good soaking. Most of the shrub perked up but as you can see from the pictures, parts of it didn't. These were the branches and leaves that dropped the most. Now the leaves have discoloured and shrivelled. I checked all the branches in case a fox had broken the trunk but they are all intact. It has only affected some parts of the shrub. Can anyone tell me why ????

If there's no physical damage, and if you've had a lot of dry weather [ and wind is very drying too ] it's probably just shedding some to help the majority thrive due to less available moisture.
It's not evergreen anyway, so it would be shutting down soon anyway.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I hope you are right. I'll keep my fingers crossed for next year. Thanks
