@amancalledgeorge 😊 We also have the neighbours’ kitchen and bathroom windows facing our way and visible ... that’s the neighbours on both sides. I’ve never noticed them watching us and I’ve not found myself watching them ... they’re nice people but just not interesting enough for me to stand at my window watching them 🤣 life’s too short ...

@amancalledgeorge I’ve done city living with noise through the apartment walls and ceiling and floor and no privacy out the back. Didn’t mind it at all when i was younger. Now I just want a quieter life and a bit of privacy. If my neighbour’s window was frosted glass I’d have no issue with it at all. Yes life is very short - too short to be dancing to someone else’s tune too. Thanks for your view. 😊
I wish our neighbours planted a hedge 2.5 or even 3m high as I consider privacy extremely important. Unfortunately quite on the contrary, they removed trees and reduced the existing bamboo hedge, reducing the privacy in our garden. I wish I had the space to plant our own hedge, but our garden is tiny, so that wouldn't work (I'm currently considering potted bamboo or a pergola to provide more privacy).
Hi @Big Blue Sky thanks and I totally agree that garden privacy is important for so many of us especially now with enforced time at home. I guess some just see hedges and trees and plants as too much work or maybe they aren’t physically capable of maintaining them.
Not here to judge anyone and will just try to use this situation to be more creative. I’m also now thinking of a covered pergola around my french doors tapering down the couple of stairs into the main bit of the garden which would certainly make things more private. Thanks 😊
I empathise as I am very private too. I think the best solution is something you can create on your side of things that she can’t touch. Hedges are such a pain if both sides don’t agree, they really can cause a lot of tension between neighbours.
We’ve recently had a neighbour remove every scrap of greenery in their garden, which has now made it so a row of terraces that were previously hidden, all now look down into our garden. Well that was a bit of a shock, but it’s their space in the end, so I’m using this as an opportunity to put up some arches and grow some roses over, which will block the view from my side of things. I understand your neighbour had no right to touch your hedge, but as it’s done, only thing to do without going to war with her, is to get creative as you’re planning to do with the pergola. Good luck.
Thank you @Omori I can imagine your shock. Your row of archways will be lovely. I agree that in some situations hedges are just not worth the bother. Here’s to next summer! 😊
I wonder what you'd make of a nearby neighbour whose bathroom is facing our garden on her first floor...the frosted glass leaves little to the imagination but we just find it hilarious...don't even think she realises she's that visible. Living in the city, I'm not fussed about feeling private in an outdoor space. Frankly it has been nice saying hi to them during this strange year so far and sharing produce and plants with them.
eek, you should tell her! I would want to know.😱😂
no chance of a private garden here... we are overlooked by at least six neighbours. I care not.
Those trees [Hoheria] wouldn't be reliably hardy up here @Wild_Violet, so it would depend where you are and what your site is like If you plant any trees, make sure they're suitable. They'll also take a while to be of any size and spread, so take that into consideration. Anything fast growing, doesn't stop growing, so unless you can afford mature specimens of appropriate trees, bear that in mind. It's why a screen and climbers is so often recommended, as it provides cover more quickly. The physical screen/pergola alone does that
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
