Acorns on newly seeded lawn

I seeded my lawn 10 days ago, and expect germination in another few days (Verve Shady Lawn seed).

It was good timing to catch the rain, but since then a lot of acorns have fallen. I am trying to weigh up which is least damaging - treading in the lawn with big footprints to pick up the acorns, or leaving the numerous small clusters of acorns in place.

Will the acorns severely hinder the growth? I presume a week or so after germination I can use a blower to get the acorns off, but for now it would scatter the seeds.

  • Thank you, how long after germination (which seems to be happening now) do you think it would be safe either to use a blower on the acorns, or to walk carefully on the proto-grass to remove the acorns?

@philippasmith2 is right - better to stay off the grass while it gets established, which will be a while.
Any acorns which might germinate won't stand regular mowing come spring/summer.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thank you both, I was also concerned about whether the weight or light blocking of the acorns would stop the new grass pushing up (we have a messy grassy area, not a nice lawn!). I'm not too worried about the acorns germinating, a quick mow tends to sort that out.

Given that the squirrels are currently planting lots of acorns in our established  green area, if we didn't mow it regularly , we would be living in the middle of a forest.  Pull out ones in flower beds that survive the winter and start to grow. Mow the ones in the lawn.
