Leyllandi Hedge

Hi, im wondering of anyone can help me answer a question?
I have a leyllandi hedge approximately 7.5 ft high and in places its about 1 to 1.5 metres wide. I am looking to reclaim some garden space back but i also like the privacy it gives, i am wondering if i can only cut one side of the leyllandi branches(on the internal side of my garden) and replace with a fence.
Would this kill the out side of the hedge?
I have already topped it last year.
Thanks

It won't kill it , no, but it might be tricky getting fence posts in securely, without doing damage. Only you can make the judgement on that, and it might depend on whether you intend doing it yourself, or getting someone in with heavy duty equipment to do it.
There's a leylandii hedge not far from me where the owners have hacked the outside back [it was encroaching severely on the pavement] and it hasn't affected the inside, but they haven't done anything else to it, so it's difficult to say whether putting a fence in there would be a problem.
Worst case scenario is that if the hedge didn't survive, you can remove it and replace with something easier, and you'd have the fence in the meantime for privacy  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks for the info.
The original plan was to apply for planning permission and take out the hedge completely and replace with brick wall and fence panels, it is on a boundary to a public road but  the wall and fence won't offer the privacy.
I have maintained it since we moved in but we were fighting a losing battle to start with as it was already the width it is now. I suppose i have nothing to lose by trying and cut all of the internal side of the hedge, if alk else fails then it wil be the costly wall and fence.

Like this? The Leylandii here was already dead on our side so I merely cut it back to the trunk and then the Fence people put this up in front of the trees. The neighbours side is still green.

  • Ooh yes, this exavy what i am looking to do, thanks.
