    @Fairygirl & @borgadr - re fireblight, the RHS says "Hawthorn hedges can be a source of infection and should probably be avoided by commercial fruit growers, but have many merits and should not be rejected by gardeners on this basis."  They're members of the Rosaceae family like apples, pears etc, but I don't think I've ever seen fireblight on hawthorn.  Not that I've looked for it...

    I had a look for info after you saying that @Liriodendron, and was really surprised. Something I've never heard before.
    I wonder if the nursery was being overly cautious, in case there was any comeback. I suppose many of them are struggling just now.   :/
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    I've had great trouble sourcing the fruit trees and bushes I want to plant, @Fairygirl - I think some nurseries have had all their propagating people on furlough.  But others are doing pretty well, and selling out of stock.  Perhaps it depends on whether they produce plants themselves or buy them in... and on whether they do mail order?  Difficult times for many...
