Canna lily

Guidance and advice please. How shall I keep these canna lilies over winter? Can I leave them in unheated greenhouse in the pots?  I am in near Heathrow Airport.

  • Yes, you need to keep them protected as they are tender. You can either dig them up, cut the stems back, let them dry off then store them in newspaper in the dark, frost free but cold place over winter. Or you can leave in the pots and put them in a greenhouse, shed or other frost free place. There's another topic discussing this part already, but some people cut the stems back in the autumn (I do this) and others leave them and cut back in the spring. Either way will be fine.

You've got some time yet though, don't cut them now. They are still growing flowering stems in your photo, so keep deadheading by snapping off the seed pods when each individual flower is finished (gently tug the flower, if it's done it'll slide off leaving the seed pod behind).
  • I live in the West Midlands and have my canna lily in a bed. I am thinking I must dig it up and store in a pot but not sure where to keep it. I have a very small green house I use for seeds but at this time of year it is more like a cold frame. If I wrapped the pot in cling film, would it store in there?
  • I live in the cold Welsh hills and all my cannas and bananas grow in pots.  Now that winter finally seems to have arrived, I simply move them in their pots into the shed and cut the foliage down once it’s withered.  It seems to work and they perk up again in the spring.
