in Garden design
i have just built a small pond on my allotment (6 feet buy 5 feet and about 20 inchers deep) can any one tell my what plants would be best  many thanks   Ian

    Have a look at one of the specialist sites @ian505. You can search by type of plant - ie marginal, floating etc, and see what will suit the location/aspect you have. 
    It helps to have surrounding planting too, to help with wildlife cover.

    Ideally have some tall plants (like Phalaris arundinacea or Equisetum Hyemale), so that the dragonflies and damselflies have somewhere to crawl out onto when they hatch.  They will also perch there as adults, looking for other adults to mate with.  It's also important to have about 60% of the surface covered with plants.  Some water lillies are great for this, and you can get dwarf ones if you only have a small pond.  Finally, you must have oxygenators (there are lots to choose from).  Always check the depth at which you should put each plant, as some need to be near to the surface.  Enjoy!
