Can all rose bushes be cut back in the way that Monty did on Friday evening? He said to treat them like brambles. I have a Lady of Shalot rose and am wondering what do do with it. My husband says to give it the Monty treatment but I'm not so sure! Many thanks. Lindy

Hi - they were old roses (single flowering), not modern shrub roses (repeat flowering), so I wouldn't! General advice is late winter (Feb) for pruning for the latter. It also depends how mature it is - if it is still `young` then only very minimal pruning until it gets established. Here's David Austin's web site:
