Young Acers

Hi,
I have 3 young Acers in pots which have been outside up until now but I fear the extreme wind lately has not helped them!  Should I now bring them into the greenhouse?   Is that enough protection over the winter or will they require fleece covering aswell?  Some leaves have dried and curled.   Also I am unsure how much to water or feed them this time of year - the soil does seem extremely wet?   Any advice would be helpful please!

Just keep them out of the wind somewhere. No feed  just now - they're becoming dormant at this time of year.
They shouldn't really need watering now, unless you're living in a very hot dry area somewhere.

  • Thank you.   We have had a lot of rain lately so I don’t think bring outside has helped them. When should I put them in a greenhouse?   Will they need fleece covering?

What size are they? Are they just the tiny things you get in supermarkets? They would only need left somewhere sheltered, like against a house wall,  to grow on.

They really don't need greenhouses  :)

Whereabouts in the country are you? if you were somewhere that gets very severe winters, you may need to protect pots, but only if that was the case  :)

  • Acers are about a foot tall and 2 foot wide - so not very big.
we live in the South East of England.
i am just unsure what to do with them from the Autumn onwards?

I'd just group them together somewhere sheltered.
They're dormant from autumn onwards, so once you've enjoyed the colours, just put them aside for winter. They'll look after themselves.
You would only need to protect the pots if you were getting a week of very severe frosts, or wet weather followed by a big drop in temps and therefore freezing. That's something we get here quite often, but even then, having pots close together, or against a house wall is usually enough protection. They're very tough.

I just wondered if you were somewhere further north and east from me, or at altitude.  :)

I have one a similar size @sue.harden1, and it has had no special care. It's been against the fence in a corner so that it's protected from severe winds [the biggest enemy of foliage] and it's in beside some other pots. I won't be doing anything more with it than that .  We get upwards of 50 or 60 frosts over winter [ we've already had half a dozen ] as well as lots of other stuff. :)
