Monty Don taking fig cuttings last night-did anyone see it?

On 'gardener's world' last night 02.10.20, I watched Monty taking cuttings from fig trees. He said it was easy. I assume he meant they are easy to root.

The cuttings he planted had  both the hardwood and  soft wood on the same stem, which is a bit different. He then planted them deep in the pot with just about 1 inch above the soil.

I wonder how long fig trees take to produce fruit?

  • I took a similar cutting a few years agos and it produced fruit in its second season.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • That is amazing Bob, very encouraging. I will try it.

I 'think' there is a fig tree at the side of the canal where I go. I will get a leaf for you to confirm. I will get some cuttings from it.

They always make cuttings look so easy.

I try and follow all the steps but my success rate is absolutely woeful.

The part of the cutting that is above soil needs to be kept moist. Ideally by misting.

They don't seem to mention this on the GW program. They just water them at the time of planting. The part under the soil does not want to be very wet as it will rot before roots develop.

I always root my fig cuttings (soft wood) in very wet vermiculite. I guess it is a cross between rooting them in a jar of water and sticking them in a pot of soil. They never dry out and don't need misting. I have had some produce a fig or two in their first year but I prefer to let them mature for another year before producing fruit.
  • Monty did mention misting.

Here is the leaf I got this morning, together with 10 cuttings to have a go with.

Most of the 'fruits' were on the ground now. A few green ones still on the trees. There is a row of about 4 or 5 by the canal.
