Multiple wisteria stems - how to manage

I’d be really grateful for some advice on my two year old wisteria! I’m hoping to train it up the side of the house.

It arrived with a single stem twisted around a cane, which continues to be the main stem. However since then it has produced two further stems, which I haven’t pruned and are still whippy green growth with leaves. Should I cut them out (to keep a single stem), or should I be keeping them and twisting them around the main stem? If keeping them, should I rub out where the leaves are growing so the stems remain bare?

Thank you!

    Can we have a photo?

You need branches coming off the main stem in order to train them across the house but you don't want them starting too low down.  I would get rid of that cane asap as it will end up embedded in the main trunk as it grows.

We have inherited 2 wisterias in this garden.  One sends out side branches much lower down than the other as it is against a blank garage wall.  The other is by a door and a window so branches higher up.   We rub or cut off any shoots that appear lower down.

  • Oh my goodness Obelixx I’ve just come back to the forum since I posted this and realised I didn’t respond to you, sincere apologies: I did exactly as you suggested (took the cane out and rubbed out the lower branches) and the whole thing is doing much better now - thank you so much. And I’ll include photos in future!

Good to know @gerrard.kate.  I'll try and remember totake photos of ours whilst still naked so you can see the structure.

Im sure your structure is remarkable @Obelixx, but don’t catch cold ... it’s wintry out there 🥶

I think you’ll still need a scarf and socks at the very least @Obelixx  😉 ... January anywhere in the northern hemisphere rarely has suitable temperatures for total nudity . I’ll get my knitting needles out 🧶
