Regarding my front hedge

Good day everyone,
Can anyone please assist with advice on how to help/improve my front hedge? The left side of it seems to be dying (or is dead) and wondering if there is anything I can do? This provides us with vital privacy so I’m panicking it will spread to the rest of the hedge. I don’t see any apparent bugs or discolouration on leaves to indicate disease but I’m not experienced with this sort of thing at all. I don’t even know what type of hedge this is 🙈 Also the rest of the hedge needs trimming, is it too late now in the year to do this? As in will it affect the plant if we trim in now (October)? Thanks so much in advance.

To answer your questions we first need to identify the hedge you have. Can't tell from those photos - although it might be privet.

    Is it evergreen?

Can you provide some in-focus close up pictures of the (healthy) leaves and stems please? perhaps also one of the leaves in the area that is dying back.

Where in the country are you. Have there been prolonged periods of drought?

What is the area under the hedge like? If it's overgrown with grass and / or weeds you'll be doing the hedge a big favour by clearing the area so there's less competition for water and nutrients.

Do you have any idea how old the hedge is? (more than 25 years, 10 years, less than 5 - just a guess will do)

  • Thanks for the comment. It is already helpful! From a quick search it does appear to be a privet and is evergreen.
After reading you comment I just checked the base and I think I might have identified the problem or at least a problem... It’s got ivy wrapping around the base as well as lots of weeds so first things first is to remove that.

It is pouring with rain at the moment so can’t take pics of the leaves I’m afraid but I’ll definitely do that as soon as rain stops.

I reckon it is older than 10 years or just under as we’ve been here 5 years already and it was well established when we moved in.

We based in Hertfordshire and we had an unusually hot and long summer. Admittedly I didn’t water it much, more out of habit of not paying it much attention, although I did water it a good few times. Another issue I have is people shoving litter in the hedge although I can’t see that doing too much damage as I usually remove it.

Would any fertiliser/ mulch / compost help by putting it at the base?

    Thanks for the help.

Privet is quite susceptible to fungal attack. Anything you can do to strengthen the plant will help it to fight disease.

I suggest you cut out any branches which are obviously dead, clear the base of the hedge of weeds and cover the area underneath the hedge with a thick (3 - 4”) mulch of something like well rotted farmyard manure which you can buy at garden centres. Water the ground first if it’s really dry under the hedge and try not to put the mulch right up against the trunks.

I probably wouldn’t feed it at this time of year - but I would apply a good general fertilizer in the spring. Try to ensure the hedge doesn’t dry out too much next summer. You definitely don’t want to over water and make the soil wet - but true drought conditions will stress the hedge.

On the whole, the hedge doesn’t look too bad and will probably respond to a little cossetting. I would wait until spring before trimming it.
