Clearing out the garden for winter and come across this, any ideas, is it friendly or not.

Also seems to have thorny stem,

We don't remember planting it.

I was wondering about Rodgersia, but there's no scale, which makes it difficult too.

Thanks for new pics....that rules out Rodgersia.
I am now leaning to Rubus sp...something related to blackberry.
Is it attempting to grow taller.

Checked out your previous answer, it looked similar to Rodgersia aesculifolia,

Blackberry has a very different shape of leaf. Didn't seem to have runners. 1 stem 1leaf.

Definitely not Rodgersia.
I said related to Blackberry.
Rubus has many different sp...most I am not familiar with.
It seems to have long prickly stems.

Stems I'd say are more hairy than prickley. We did have thornless blackberry's several years ago,
Leaves where more like normal blackberries.

May be hoik it out into a pot and see what happens.
