What to do/grow at the foot of Leylandii hedge?

A few ferns, scruffy st John's
wort, angled periwinkle grow under the hedge. Wondering if there is a
solution to make it look 'neat and tidy'? Plants? Gravel edging? Desperately need some ideas!
( too costly to remove/replace it but it has good points - It
encourages birds, wildlife and is a good pollution/sound barrier to some
extent)

Or you can just cut the grass edge and dig down a bit deeper to give a slight 'trench' effect. The bark makes it look tidy and suppresses weeds etc.

You could always weed kill the ivy if it makes life easier.
