Wine bottle corks

My other half is quite fond of wine so I have wine bottle corks to dispose of. Could I put them on my compost heap or in the recycling bin? Any ideas would be welcome!

Court you stick them on the end of canes to stop you poking your eye out?
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • That is a good idea Which I have done in the past, but I have quite a surplus now!

I use them in the bottom of ceramic pots when I'm planting something that doesn't need the whole pot filled with compost for deep roots.  They're lightweight but also absorb some water so act as a reservoir if you forget to water and also insulation if left in over winter.

You can re-use them too when re-potting.  Last for years - but not the rubbery ones.  They don't absorb water.

You can carve the wine cork itself - a bit like potato printing.

Or you could get one of those bush tucker hats and attach them.
    Sorry - I'm in a funny mood  ;)
Actually - what is the purpose of the corks round the hat thing? Does anyone know?
Is it to keep flies away?

I think @Obelixx's idea is an excellent one. Useful for partially filling big pots too, especially if you need to move them, and much better than polystyrene as they're compostable if they break down.
Perhaps I should take up drinking.....

I understood it was for flies @Fairygirl but it would irritate me more than the flies.
