Indoor Daffodil - growing tip above or below soil level?

  • I love the smell of daffodils and one of my favourite ones for smell is Falconet.
  • @pitter-patter tazettas are some of my favorites, I almost ordered Falconet this year but bought Laurens Koster instead. Both are supposed to have a strong smell.

From the sounds of it, it seems to be a good thing that I can't smell paperwhites!
  • @Dovefromabove I read about the modern Israeli paperwhites being particularly pungent compared to its predecessor somewhere too..

@pitter-patter @strelitzia32 Is Falconet suitable for forcing indoors? What other fragrant indoor daffodils would you guys recommend?
  • I would love to grow some indoors daffodils, but my windowsills are all taken by the pelargonium cuttings. Narcissus Avalanche has a nice scent and it’s suitable for forcing. I’ve grown it outside last year and it was very nice. Your choices are good though.
  • @celcius_kkw I think most tazettas are good for forcing, falconet and Laurens koster both are. I can't really recommend any other fragrant ones as they're all the same (zero scent) to me! I've only got a couple of small dishes for indoor ones anyway so not really a massive selection to advise you from, sorry.

The main reason I started with indoor daffs is because I can't handle the smell of hyacinth indoors, it's too strong and gives me a headache. So zero smell is fine by me.
  • @pitter-patter My windowsills are also starting to fill up with plants.. if only I have more space! 😆 Do you grow any scented pelargoniums?

@strelitzia32 I love the smell of scented flowers indoors.. and I’m yet to come across one that is too strong.. that said paperwhite might just be the first lol
  • I grow some scented pelargonium as well, yes. I like the rose one mostly and I use it to flavour jams as well.

@strelitzia32 I have bought some Laurence Koster too, so hopefully they will do well.
  • @celcius_kkw can you manage strong scented oriental lilies indoors? I can smell those when I'm fairly close, but the scent affects me quite significantly before I can actively smell it. If that makes sense? I get a headache before I can register the lily scent that causes it. It's a shame because I love oriental lilies too, I just have to keep them in the garden and never as a cut flower...

Some lilies, particularly the pink and white ones, smell like fabric plasters to me.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

I did forced bulbs one year, years ago, and it seemed like lots of faffing around putting them in a dark cool place inside a sealed plastic bag and then checking them for signs of growth after a month or two.. then bring them inside to a sunny window.. after which point it was easy.  But the whole in the dark bag thing put me off them.  I think they were paperwhites.

Is there any of the above suggested I can just grow inside on the windowsill?  Pop them in and keep them watered, and they can just do their thing?
