Heather is turning brown, what can I do?

I haven't had this heather for long, but it doesn't seem to be doing well. I'm a novice gardener, is this normal or is something wrong? If so what can I do?

Those parts are dead, so need cutting off.
You can't keep them indoors - they're extremely hardy outdoor plants. They need water but good drainage.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • It's a hardy outdoor plant and it won't be happy living indoors in a warm, dry atmosphere. Most of the leafy shoots look as if they have died already, so you should trim those off, give it a dunk underwater to get the compost properly wetted and then look for a place outside to plant it. Ideally they prefer acid soil, but anything is better than nothing to start with. There look to be enough green shoots in the middle to get it going again.

If it's dead, you could spray it blue. B)
