Prunus amangawa

Hi
I bought this tree last July, it was in its pot for 8 months before I had the chance to plant it. I have two issues, the first being, it’s leaf size and colour seemed bigger and richer when in the pot. Secondly there is branch rubbing so I am looking for advice on this also.  You can see how the leaves are a deep green where as this summer they have been a lot lighter.

  • It's a shame it looks more like a standard than a true pillar that it is usually grown into. The end of this month is when it will be taking on its autumn colour as some of the leaves show, but I agree that it looks a bit chlorotic. Did you feed it at all or mulched when you planted it in the ground? It looks like it's lacking nutrients and probably is a bit dry too. Mine has been wonderful this year on its second year in the ground but it has required quite a lot of watering to support all the new growth. They respond really well to improved conditions so don't worry too much about it but make sure there's a nice clear area around its base and mulch with some compost or manure.

  • I agree, make sure you are giving it enough water - 2 bucketfuls, twice a week will be needed until it loses its leaves.  Resume watering in the spring if it doesn't rain for a week and continue for the rest of next year, after which it should have established well anough to support itself.  I would remove that rubbing branch but it may be best to wait until late spring, otherwise you risk Silverleaf or canker infecting the wound if you prune it off in autumn or winter.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Could you just tie that rubbing branch into a more vertical position, using soft string to attach it to a neighbouring more upright branch?  It should then thicken up in a year or two.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
