What are these and should I put them back?

Hello, I was clearing some of my garden today, in an area where I would like to put a vegetable garden next year and I dug these up.
Should I put them back in the ground elsewhere? Are they flowers?

Some kind of bulb, but hard to tell what. Does the foliage smell oniony if you crush it? That would indicate allium although I couldn't guess whether culinary, ornamental or weed. If not then my best guess would be grape hyacinths because they often start to grow in the autumn.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Another vote for grape hyacinths.  I’ve got some which are coming through already and look the same as yours, albeit shorter at the mo.
  • Thank you, I guess I will put them back in somewhere then!
  • They can be rather invasive and you may well find them still appearing in the area you removed them from, so I would suggest you grow them in pots until you decide whether you like them.  The flowers are lovely but because they hold their (often very long) leaves for so long, they can look untidy for a long time unless hidden by other planting.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks @BobTheGardener I will try that!
