Poorly patio rose

Good morning, what would you do about this rose?

I bought it two summers ago to suit the conditions (suitable for container, east-facing) but it looks in bad shape! It has black spot, I’ve picked off the worst leaves and pruned out congested and worst diseased stems but this has left it nearly naked. It hasn’t cheered up at all!

I’m wondering if I should repot it, plant it out into a border, cut it back hard or just leave it alone? I also wonder if it’s suffered from lack of water, something I’m not great at remembering to do... Thanks

  • It is quite difficult to grow roses happily in compariatively small containers. All plants are happiest in open soil. However, you should be able to get a couple of years enjoyment from a patio rose. They need regulare watering and feeding to get  the best from them, black spot is the bane of most rose growers. I have found that to start spraying them with an anti blackspot product in Jan. and then regularly through the growing season does help.
Remove every leaf with the black spot on it and burn or bin it. Never put the infected leaves on the compost heap. There are supposed to be black spot resisant varieties but it is still hard work to keep them happy and healthy.

..the name of the rose always helps, if known...  it looks like one of David Austin's shrub roses..  'Jubilee Celebration'? or similar?...   in which case it's not a Patio rose, although it may be situated on a patio... roses like these do not keep well in small pots beyond a season or two.. without some degree of expertise in pot maintenance... if you don't feel you are up to that, then it would be best to plant it in the ground this autumn...
...black spots and leaf defoliation is very common this time of year... nothing to worry about unduly with your rose..

  • Thank you both, it looked brilliant earlier this summer and was great last year too-maybe that’s my two seasons up!

I’ve never sprayed my plants for anything before but, as all my roses seem to suffer badly with this awful black spot, I may give in and start next year...

Marlorena I’ve had a rummage through my labels, it’s definitely David Austin, I think it’s this one:

So you are right-not a patio rose! I’ll plant it out this afternoon.

    thanks again!
