Asparagus Fern Turning Yellow

My asparagus fern, which has stopped growing, is turning yellow. Up until a few months ago, the fern was growing quite rapidly. Now, the foliage is starting to turn yellow.

I water it once per week (or when the moisture metre indicates that I need to).

any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Good on you for keeping it alive as long as you have!  I love them because a beloved aunt always grew a huge one in the living room, they remind me of her.  Unfortunately they always go downhill quickly with me, so I gave up after the second one.

Do you mist it regularly?  Get it on a pebble tray filled with water to below the level of the rocks, and mist it daily with distilled water - if you are not already.  Hopefully others have good advice, as I don't have a sound tract record with them. 🙄

  • Until a couple of months ago, when I finally got round to re-potting it, mine was crammed into a small terracotta hanging pot, and it has only been watered when I remember, or a yelllowing leaf tip prompts me. It had lived happily in its small pot for many years and never been misted in its life, but it hangs in a cool, North facing porch, unheated and with lots of cool and often very damp air whenever the outer door is opened. It is still happy and growing well.
Though not an expert, I watch my plants and try to keep them happy. This experience  with my own plant suggests that the most important factor may be the position, cool and with no sunlight, as it coped with the vagaries of my watering even in a too small, porous pot. It has certainly never been over watered, as it took care even to moisten the compost in the old pot, as it would run off the dry surface.

    Maybe this would help:

I used to grow them years ago. I think its  a matter of three things (as is usual for plants 😉) finding the correct light level, the right amount of water it likes and then maybe it needs feeding. Not sure about the water metre, never used one, and plants are rather Individual in their needs.

    Hope it helps.

  • Too much water. Keep them very dry esp. in winter. Despite being a fern they do like some sunlight.
Everyone likes butterflies. Nobody likes caterpillars.
  • My grandmother had one which sat in her unheated front porch for decades. It sounds as if it may be either too warm or too dry where you have it now?
