Overwintering young plants

I have taken cuttings from Hellebores, Dianthus, Honeysuckle and Fuchsias.  They have rooted and I've potted them on, but I'm not sure whether I should overwinter them in the (cold) greenhouse or outside.  I also have rooted seedlings from Aquilegia 'Lime Sorbet' and, again, not sure how to overwinter them.  Any advice?

  • Thanks for the response.  I am in Shropshire and the garden is fairly sheltered, space is limited in the greenhouse and I have to fight my husband for it - he does a lot of winter salad crops. Maybe we need another one!
  • Yes - but I hadn't considered the alternative - food for thought!  Many thanks! ;)

I'd say those are all fine outside in a sheltered spot if they're already reasonably settled in pots. If the fuchsia isn't a hardy one, save that for the greenhouse.
All the others are completely hardy, and just need some shelter from the worst of winter weather. Even against a house wall, or under a table or similar. Just somewhere with some light.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Perhaps you could consider a coldframe?  Always useful for cuttings,  hardening off stuff etc.  :)
  • Thanks both - the fuchsias are hardy, so I think I'll risk outside. Ironically, AnniD, I had a cold frame but gave it away when we bought the greenhouse.  Might have to consider buying a new one if space gets tight. :)
