If you have bramble creeping over from next door, just dig them up and pull as much out as possible. I have noticed you have mulch down already, so I suspect, that should keep a lot of the smaller weeds down. You should be able to dig them up if the soil is reasonably damp.
  • Thank you, I’m not sure why the stakes were there to be honest. We do get a lot of badgers and foxes - perhaps it was to ward them off? I’ve had two ripped out in the night - once.

Today I have removed as many weeds and whatever else I’ve found under the hedges and given them a good soaking.

ill be looking up mulch as I’ve naively never heard of it - total amateur.

I also gave them a little trim, especially the stragglers. Maybe I could have gone harder, but I got cold feet so only cut off the leggy bits.

Apologies - mulch is just a layer of material - compost, rotted manure etc, put around plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. It breaks down over time and feeds the soil too  :)
It also looks good around plants.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
