Cabbage beastly beetles!

tui34tui34 Posts: 3,493
Hello - I hope you can help me.  Here are my cabbages being laid waste by these yellow and black beetles.   How do I get rid of them, please?

This summer, (end July) I planted a few cabbages out, but 3 of them were "pillaged" from the root upwards, wilted and died.    I had garlic in this spot this past winter before the cabbages and the garlic took a turn for the worst in Spring and the leaves became black.  I "treated" the soil with boiling water and neem oil after harvesting the garlic in June.

I now suspect that these fellas are the culprits as they live in the ground.  Apparently, they don't like damp humid places but come out in Spring.  I have scattered ash around the cabbages.  My cauliflower, broccoli and kale are unscathed.

Oh what to do?
TuiThis photo is my dying cabbage taken in August.  It's history now.  Wouldn't even feed it to the hens!

@tuikowhai34 I think it might be the early stage nymph of Tritomegas bicolor - Pied Shield Bug.

@floralies  Merci beaucoup.  Apart from watering them, any ideas how to deter them?

In case anyone is reading this, Neem oil is a good repellent - 1. The smell and 2.  The water.  Few drops of Neem oil in warm to hot water.

Maybe try pyrethrum based insecticide in the evening. This is made from a natural source (chrysanthemum) and breaks down in sunlight so wont harm bees etc. It should kill  the bugs hiding over night.

@Bijdezee   Thank you for that idea.  I shall spray them this evening if they have returned.  We had heavy rain during the night, so the leaves are still glistening today.  Apparently, they don't like damp.
    Cheers
