Is this a rose plant?

Hello, I think this is a rose bush? It doesn't really seem in very good condition 🤔 but I'm not sure if that's how Rose bushes usually look at this time of year? Thanks!

Thank you, do you have any suggestions what to do with it? We have just moved here 2 weeks ago, so it wasn't neglected by me! Do you know if rose bushes are easy to move?
  • As it's going into dormancy, you can just make sure it's watered well and make a cleared area all around the base as the weeds will make its life harder. After watering well I'd sprinkle a bit or organic fertiliser and a nice layer of compost or composted manure as mulch to give it a bit of nutrition. Also clear any fallen leaves before mulching to minimise fungal diseases that are harboured for next season. It looks like it's leaning in the photo, if that's the case see if you can use a small stake to straighten it a bit.

Fingers crossed next year you will see if you like the flowers and decide if you want to keep it or not. Doesn't look like it has been pruned particularly well in the past but they're tough plants, so give it a chance.  But anyway, if it doesn't work out so many to choose from if you want roses for your particular climate. Good luck!

  • You can move roses but with something as bedraggled, I'd just buy a bare root one and put it in the right place, make a fresh start. And it's a great learning experience to plant one from scratch.

  • @amancalledgeorge thank you for the advice! I will do as you suggested with the old plant and will try a new one too!

I agree with all the above suggestions br AMCG, except I wouldn’t fertilise this late in the year. Leave that until Spring when it’s coming into new growth after it’s winter dormancy. Around February/early March (before it breaks dormancy) you can prune the longer canes by around a third which will also help rejuvenate it.

  • Thanks @Nollie should I prune it now or in the spring?
  • Yes rose fertilisation usually takes place in early spring and mid June but for a plant that has suffered I think it's a good idea to five it some food...the mulch will do it anyway.
