Question about plant netting

Hi

I learnt days ago that pigeons love my broccoli so I’m buying a plant netting to protect my vegs from birds

should I buy something else to hold the net and give room to the vegs, or should I leave it on top of the leaves, and when the veg grows it will hold the net itself?

I used an old net that I bought as insect netting to go over an open window. Protected my strawberries to a certain extent and I'll try it on the purple sprouting broccoli next year. Cabbage whites totally decimated mine. Not sure if such a product will be cheaper than ones labelled "gardening".

A bog standard net curtain would probably do the job and be much cheaper than either insect nets or plant nets. In fact, I'm using an old net curtain as an insect mesh over the window - works great!
